The past two years have been some of the toughest of our lives – no doubt, it’s simply fact. That said, for me, the past two years have been enlightening and empowering in ways that are hard to articulate. Facing my own inner struggles alongside the external challenges of the global pandemic together has, strangely, left me feeling more liberated.
In terms of my hobby, I have been shedding a great deal of outmoded thinking and many assumptions. I have been trying new ideas and working towards playing the kinds of games I have now discovered are the kinds of games I wanted to play all along. Of course, as with all moments of discovery, I wasn’t yet ready to hear that truth.

I don’t know what the future holds in 2022. I don’t see much point in trying to predict it because, after all these years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m pretty crap at predicting anything more than a few minutes at a time… and even worse when it comes to myself.
As I look forward into 2022, at this precise moment in time, my hopes are pretty simple to articulate: I want to keep pushing the edges and boundaries of my hobby to see where it leads me.
I merely want to keep running games that I enjoy.
As I spoke about at the start of the current season of Roleplay Rescue podcast, what I am aiming to achieve is simply described:
- Spending time with people I enjoy being engaged with creatively.
- Immersing myself into deeply-grounded and evocative fantastic worlds.
- Exploring those worlds through the senses of well-crafted, likeable, and believable characters.
If 2022 can be an opportunity to do more of that, then let’s get into it.
Game on!
