Yesterday was quite the gaming day, with time spent roleplaying solo and then an evening of entertainment after I cracked open the Battletech Beginner Box.

Playing solo with Battletech is nowhere near as much fun as playing with an opponent but I had a blast. I also won my first and second bouts, so that was a bonus. I had fun re-discovering the joys of jumping over the head of a Battlemech and then blasting it from behind.

There’s two plastic assembled minis, a double-sided battle mat (desert and grasslands), QS Rules, a brief intro to the Battletech Universe, a short novel, a pair of dice, and all the reference cards you need to add in a taste of the full game.

The Beginner’s Box runs on very basic rules and I am fully aware that the fuller Game of Armoured Combat boxset offers a far richer experience. The big upside was simple: I got back to playing a game that I enjoy!
Armed with the excitement of that first session, I am ready to dig back into my other Battletech sets – the full Battletech “Armoured Combat” boxset plus the Clan Invasion set I got back in December 2021. I can easily see me taking this to the school gaming club in the coming weeks.
Game on!

Nice. Battletech is my 2nd favourite game after D&D. I gave away my stuff in the big purge 27/28 years ago. 😦
Are the modern rules very different?

I can’t really remember the old rules. The Battletech sets seem pretty similar to my memory. Probably small stuff that changed. Still 2d6, roll high to hit and all that.
