Wildwood Beginnings…

I stand on the precipice, the spot that the old tome suggests is the beginning of the path. The chasm falls deep below, the sound of water rushing through the rocks muffled by the thin mist that floats between here and the Wildwood on the other side.

I’ve been struggling with a tension in my roleplaying experience between service to the groups I play with and service to my own creative projects. Having aired this tension through the GM’s Journal, I’ve received messages of encouragement. This helped me to lay aside the prep for my group games and pick up something solo instead.

A tall gnarled tree stands like a sentry opposite and just to my left, a stream pours into a gentle waterfall just to my right on the far side. The morning light catches the thin rain as it falls vertically. I can see it: the rainbow bridge.

The Wildwood as a game is arising from discovering the Wildwood Tarot Deck, which I wrote about a couple of weeks back. The images from the deck are inspiring a deep pool of imaginary potential which I have simultaneously wanted to explore using the Imagine roleplaying game.

Holding my breath, I realise my mind is not convinced that I can simply walk to the other side. It is forbidden to cross and there are no paths from the village yonder behind me, yet I know I must have courage to enter the Wildwood.

Today I sat down and played for a couple of hours. Drawing inspiration from The Wanderer, I have given myself over to playing within a new world. For method, I have chosen the tarot cards for imaginary inspiration, Mythic 2e to play the role of GM, and to write my notes with pencil on paper.

Exhaling slowly, I open my arms wide, palms facing outward, and step into the void, hoping that the bridge will carry me to the other side.

So it begins with a new character. Imagine gives me the direction and leads me towards creating a Wanderer. I’m happy to follow the pictures in my mind and allow my consciousness to fall into the imagined Otherworld. Who knows where this bridge will take me?

Game on!
