Blueshort the Bard

Blueshort is another one of the School D&D Club characters that I have been joyfully porting over to the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game. Although officially an Elf in Basic D&D (1983), the way the player has been using him made him more of a rogue-type. I decided to see how he works out as an Elven Bard.

To be clear, I typically dislike the idea of the D&D Bard and it took an effort of will to choose to make Blueshort fit that mould in DFRPG. Once I took the plunge, however, I found it all pretty entertaining to create.

I’ve been extremely loose with this translation across systems, interpreting a Charisma score of 4 as not having the Charisma advantage for example. I’ve also largely ignored the D&D Elf’s infravision, just taking the default DFRPG Elf template as written. That gives him Magery 0, an ability that is probably just dead points.

I think a more effective translation might be to do the Wizard thing, but well, I don’t think Blueshot is really a wizardly type. He has Magic Missile on the original D&D sheet but he’s being played more as a Scout. Which has me wondering how much we should adhere to the Professional Templates in DFRPG.

But this was a fun exercise and I got to practice character creation. I think I might make a Scout version of him now, giving him a couple of Wizard spells and seeing how that works out.

Game on!
