Drawn To Old Imperfection

It’s hard to explain why but I’ve been feeling strongly drawn towards playing solo in Fellmyr using the original GURPS boxed set and supplements that I own. Even though I know that the first edition of the game is flawed, I am drawn towards the sense of simplicity it represents.

Certainly, I can run a game with modern GURPS and it’ll be far more elegant. I can strip out everything that’s not in that old boxed set and run a game that emulates the content with ease. Yet, there is something about playing with old things that is very appealing.

It’s the sense I have rediscovered through playing D&D Basic (1983). There’s a sense of simplicity and beauty that exists even within a deeply flawed set of rules when it is played with a lightness of spirit. I’m not entirely sure I can explain this or rationalise it… or even that it needs explanation and rational justification.

There is something appealing and interesting about the early form of the game that I am drawn to experience. This is not a new phenomena for me… but it remains somewhat mysterious and curious.

  1. There’s something that’s just more fun, for me at least, precisely because the old rules are often flawed and unpredictable.

    I’ve been introducing people to OSR over the past few weeks, and while it’s not for everyone, most of them really get into it. Occasionally the dice take a violent dislike to someone and things suddenly go horribly wrong, but that just makes your decisions seem more important – it’s more satisfying to win when you know how badly it could have gone!
