The One Ring

#RPGaDAY2023 Day 25: “UNPLAYED RPG you own”.

If there’s one (out of many dozens) of games that I own but have never played, The One Ring is the title that pops most immediately to mind. That’s because it’s a title that I would look forward to playing, if not myself running.

Having backed the Kickstarter for the Second Edition, even after hardly playing the First Edition either, I was pleased with the book and the accompanying Starter Set. I’ve not got around to opening the supplement nor the GM Screen, however.

It’s one of the few licensed RPGs that feels like it might hit close to the flavour and feel of the source material. Of course, I can’t judge that for certain because I’ve not yet found anyone willing to GM it for me. As a GM myself, I fear I would not do the source material justice.

As with all licensed RPGs, the biggest barrier to me actually playing it is the presence of Professor Tolkien’s canon and all the myriad commentary that has been written and said since publication. But I’ve discussed this before and recently, so I’ll not repeat myself. I think the Hobbit game presented in the Starter Set appears manageable but beyond that…

The One Ring sits on the stacks, awaiting an outing. That seems ironic to me.

Game on!
