Killer + Paranoia

#RPGaDAY2023 Day 17: “FUNNIEST Game you’ve played”

In 1985, we started playing Killer at school. These games were hilariously funny and led to all manner of detentions: it seems that throwing egg or flour bag grenades around was frowned upon. To be fair, it’d be frowned on today.

In 1987, we discovered Paranoia. This was the moment when the Computer became our friend and we began the highly entertaining task of hunting down Commies (slang: Communist). By this time, our group was about eight strong, so the games were lively.

The funniest game I ever played was inspired by taking the premise of Paranoia (hunting Commies) and applying it to a (very brief) game of Killer. We were Sixth Formers by then, having the run of the school and far too many free periods for study. If memory serves, the game lasted about a day but, oh… what a day!

To be fair, these two games were a lot of fun on their own and that experiment clearly failed. That said, it is an example of the kind of random stuff we would make up and run with as teens. Why don’t we do stuff like this anymore?

Game on!
