Roleplayer #14 Cover Art

Opening up a digital copy of Roleplayer, the GURPS Newletter, Issue #14 this morning I was wowed by the first ever cover art for that proto-magazine.

The black-and-white with the added single-colour splash just works for me. I find the image evocative and engaging. My mind asks questions about the characters in the scene. The precision of the rifle and armour against the visceral curves of the biological alien… yes!

The issue itself is good too, in particular a lovely article outlining the background of the design decisions made for science-fiction weapons and armour in GURPS Space. I wish I’d been able to read when it was published in June 1989. I was just finishing my A-Levels at that time.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I find that kind of line art far more evocative than all the modern digital glitz,

Game on!

  1. my favorite RPG art is B&W line drawings. guess because that is what was available when I was starting out in the early 80s. I think it inspires more imagination than the hyper-detailed CGI we often get now. Let’s me interpret things more I feel.
