Books Into Teenaged Hands

Quick news update from the School D&D Club: two copies of “So You Want To Be a Game Master” have been shared with the students and there was much excitement! In short, two newbie aspiring GMs showed interest and are taking the books away.

When Justin Alexander announced his new book, I preordered it the same day. Then I decided to preorder a second copy to take to school. When I was given a Book Voucher, I hopped on Blackwell’s and preordered a third copy. They all arrived within a couple of days.

The book has now sold out. A second and third printing have been ordered by the publisher, but it’ll be months before orders in the UK get fulfilled. Yes, I told the students this because I think this book is a big deal… the sales seem to point to other people agreeing with me.

What’s awesome is that students who weren’t showing signs of being aspirant GMs have decided to take the book home for a read. I thought that maybe the 540+ pages might put them off, but no. The idea of learning how to GM was strong enough.

So… here’s hoping. Maybe some new GMs will emerge in the weeks and months to come. I’m just glad I made the investment in preordering.

Game on!

  1. It’s heartening to see people potentially becoming interested in something new. I hope that some of your students do decide to take on the role of GM. Despite being a GM of many years experience, I also bought a copy of the Alexandrian’s book and am thoroughly enjoying it. I wish something like it had been written back in the dim and distant days of prehistory, when I only had my copy of the Tunnels and Trolls basic rulebook to give me an idea of how to play RPGs. It would have been a welcome addition to my bookshelf. Anyway, well done having the sense to get a couple of extra copies for your students!
