Scouting Solo

Today has been the first full day of the Christmas holiday, home alone and convalescing in response to the cold/flu/whatever crud that I have inevitably contracted from work. In characteristic style, I sat down with some favoured game stuff and entertained myself.

One of my favourite activities is the creation of characters for RPG play. In this case, I allowed myself to draw upon the GURPS Traveller templates and create Aaron Fel, an ex-Imperial Scout with a Detached Duty Scout/Courier at his disposal.

Imagining him as hailing from Regina in the Spinward Marches, I contemplated a run of adventures out spinward towards Foreven Sector. I can imagine some entertaining antics enroute to the so-called “preserve” sector that is supposedly open for the Referee’s own development.

Of course, I could as easily drop him into a freshly imagined subsector of space. Rolling up a random series of star systems and then exploring them through play is in the spirit of the original Traveller I love so much. But for now, creating the character was enough.

It seems to me that, when it comes down to it, making up characters and giving them quantifiable stats is a part of the hobby that I enjoy almost as much as any other.

Game on!
