#RPGaDAY2023 Day 18: “FAVOURITE game system”.
Are you kidding? The clear and obvious answer is GURPS – the Generic Universal Role-Playing System from Steve Jackson Games. Of course, I have to be contrary and state that, right now, I favour GURPS Third Edition.

Rather than blather on about why, I think it might be more useful to summarise what I’ve been doing with GURPS over the past week or so. The short version is that I’ve begun working up an open table fantasy dungeon / wilderness exploration campaign inspired by old-school D&D.
The Northlands are about to come alive as I begin the first session with some friends, rolling up some characters using the revision of Simple Dungeon GURPS and heading into a dungeon to test them out. What I am adding to the Third Edition are the missing game structure procedures to make a dungeoncrawl and hexcrawl work.
But time is up – I need to go run a session.
Game on!

Good luck with the open table! I’ve been considering doing something like that since I heard you talk about it on the podcast. I’m thinking about setting it in another part of the world my long-running Dungeon Fantasy-ish game is already taking place in.
I’d love to see more of the details on those structural procedures you’re adding.

I shared the dungeon crawl procedure prototype in the DFRPG Dungeoncrawl Sequence post: https://roleplayrescue.com/2022/05/12/websters-dfrpg-dungeoncrawl-sequence/
I think an earlier version of Simple Dungeon GURPS has the full three procedures: https://roleplayrescue.com/2023/03/18/simple-dungeon-gurps/
The main changes to v0.8 have been around character creation, plus I have made my game a Basic Set (3e) powered version.
Hope that helps!
