School Club Reignition

For most of my teaching career, I’ve run a school RPG club wherever I have been working. This year the idea of the “D&D Club” has been approved again and today I sent out some notifications to students ready to begin next week.

It’s been cool to have students approach me – two on Day One of the academic year – to ask if the club is going ahead. Enthusiasm from the students is a primary motivator for me and a good indicator of the club’s value to young people.

The main question on my mind is, “What am I going to offer?”

Good fun had playing two particular system last year

Past years have worked well with some kind of fantasy genre dungeon-based open table arrangement, like last year’s “powered by BECMI” adventures in Fellmyr. I am probably going to run at least some one-shot or short adventures in that world again.

That said, I’d like to run some one-shots in other genres for those students who have the strange idea that all roleplaying games are focused on the fantasy genre. I have an idea for a mystery scenario in the horror genre and I’d also enjoy running something futuristic too.

What’s also important is to encourage some of the existing club members to step up and run some games for their friends. While I enjoy hosting the sessions, the truth is that over the past year several gamers have become dependent on me being GM.

Yes, we’ll have a school RPG club for another year. I just hope we can build towards a more varied offering at the table.

Game on!
