#RPGaDAY2023 Day 31: “FAVOURITE RPG of all time”
Well, we made it. Last of the August #RPGaDAY posts and, yes, I am glad it’s nearly done. Anyhow…
What’s my favourite RPG of all time? That is a complicated question to answer. There are three different possibilities: GURPS, RuneQuest 2e, and OD&D.

GURPS is my current favourite RPG and the only rules system I am running at present. This is because I am a big fan of realistic and grounded rules which can be used in multiple worlds. I am also mastering just one game at a time right now to help with my anxiety and self-consciousness around GMing.
RuneQuest 2e was the game that “did it” for me, transforming me from a curious and excited wargamer who played some RPGs too into a rabid and fully “converted” RPG player. Without RuneQuest, the hobby would not have resonated with me in quite the same way. I suspect that Glorantha had a far deeper impact on me than even I realise.
BUT OD&D… that has to be my favourite RPG ruleset of all time because it gave us a package that showed us the path in the first place. I never played it back in the day but I love what it offers to us, even now. I refer to it for mega-dungeoneering and wilderness fantasy gaming inspiration regularly.
All that said, it’s the RPG itself that I love. The specifics of rules systems and worlds, of characters or particular memories all pale before the spectre of RPGs as a whole.
I love roleplaying games. Period. I especially love the playing of the role bit.
Game on!
